It is my pleasure to welcome you here today to NHS Dumfries and Galloway and particularly here to the Crichton and to Easterbrook Hall. I just like to say how delighted I am to be here and how delighted I am to be launching this particular programme for a group of people who are the very backbone of our workforce in the health service here in Scotland and form the backbone of care for the people of Scotland as well. In essence, being an Effective Practitioner or the kernels of what makes us an Effective Practitioner haven't really changed but the context in which you work has changed absolutely dramatically. And therefore I think this programme has been launched at a very particular time. It's at a time when we've got the Quality Strategy as our ambition for healthcare in Scotland and what role all of you will play in that. In making sure that patients have care and compassion, clean, safe environment, communication, continuity, safety etc. etc. all the things that make up that list that we're all very familiar with now. The last thing that I want to say is that I believe at this time when you are facing some external challenges, I hope you see the challenges that are facing us in NHSScotland we have a fantastic foundation to build on of policy, of strategies, of excellence in leadership, in academic excellence. We lead the world in many aspects of healthcare, we've got a fantastic platform on which to build. In that context I believe education becomes more and not less important. I was asked to talk a little about what we had done in Dumfries because (I don't think we've said) one of the reasons we're in Dumfries is not only because I Co-chair but because we're a pilot in Dumfries and Galloway for the Effective Practitioner Initiative. We agreed to be a pilot, what we did was we selected an NMAHP team, the team themselves agreed a particular topic that they wanted to use the Effective Practitioner to help them work on in their development. The members of that team worked both separately and collectively to increase their appreciation of the subject that they had chosen. I would contend for NHS Dumfries and Galloway that it's a new tool to support joint-working and we used a relatively new team which was formed in one of our community hospitals and it was a good opportunity for that team to gel together using Effective Practitioner as the tool. So the way forward for us in Dumfries and Galloway the benefits are certainly wide ranging. There are benefits for the individual practitioner, there are benefits for the multi-disciplinary team, for the service that they work within and certainly for the organisation itself and the bigger benefit for NHS Scotland. But most importantly the benefit for patients. We decided that we wouldn’t do a standard PowerPoint presentation but actually ask our three members of our User Reference Group to give their opinions of their experience. On the site for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals – as we’ve been hearing the Effective Practitioner is an initiative to support us and it’s to allow us to do the best we can in our day a to day work. It has learning activities that are also specifically designed for level 5 and 6 practitioners and many of these at the bottom of your learning activity it will say where it’s pertinent to your KSF development review, your PDP and revalidation and I think that’s something we all need a little help with at the end of the day when we’re looking for ideas for that. They’re bite-sized chunks these wee learning activities and most can probably be incorporated into a shift – into the working day. The good thing about it is you choose – learning activities are there – pick one that’s relevant to you – one that you can apply to yourself. There’s also space for sharing something new because the website will be ongoing there’ll always be new things added in over time. When you go on the website initially there are quite clear topics at the top of the screen and one of them is about supporting staff. This section of the web resource is designed for managers or supervisors, mentors even buddies who are part of a support network. Resources from the various sections can be used online but there’s also a facility for much of the resource to be downloaded and that would be useful in a supporting role with those staff who maybe don’t have IT access or are a little unsure about accessing it on the computer. It’s very dynamic, it’s very much an interface between the practitioner and the support for that practitioner and it’s a learning process for both. I would like to thank Ros and I particularly want to thank Joanna, who in our Steering Group, I would class as being our conscious, our patient public representative, who did make a massive difference and really kept us on the Steering Group right on the line of making sure that the person-centeredness of this programme was meaningful and tangible. I suppose in listening to my clinical colleagues reflect on how they have utilised the resource to date, I am really really clear that as clinicians we are experiential learners and the emphasis that Theresa you made around work-based learning is really what this initiative is about.
